Sometimes for inspiration, I go out and look at the History of the Day. Yesterday was no exception. I’m sure it wasn’t a surprise what came up! But setting the horror of 9/11 aside, I discovered that Nikita Khrushchev passed away on that date.
Many of you probably don’t recognize that name, but, then again, many of you didn’t have a father who did work in Russia. Khrushchev ruled supreme in the Soviet Union from 1955 to 1964. He was one of the only USSR leaders to travel to the United States.
In my office, I have a stacking doll set of the Soviet Union leaders, and Khrushchev is depicted holding an ear of corn. This is because, he wanted to plant corn to solve their agricultural problems. They were struggling to provide a sustainable diet for their people and livestock. Unfortunately, when he ordered the current crops to be destroyed to plant corn, they didn’t know the first thing about raising corn.
The entire story made me think about how we are planting seeds, but are we planting the right seeds. You see, technically, we are always planting seeds. When we are grouchy, short-tempered, and petty, we are planting those seeds in the people around us. We are destroying what is already there and planting seeds that we can only hope don’t take root. My challenge for this week is to plant the right seeds.
